Below is the best picture I could get of the leaves on the main trees. Note especially the leaves near the upper right corner of the pic. Frankly, I do not see any difference between those leaves and the small maples, except that the color is a bit lighter. Both have the same five-lobed shape.
Here are a couple of pics of the ivy mats. It seems that both kinds of plants are involved, at least in the lower, green areas of the mat. The upper tangle with the dead or dying leaves is clearly part of the mat, though the forest canopy behind them also contributes to the appearance. It looks like the red maple-type leaf litter could very well have come from these mats.
For comparison, here is the same groundcover provided in Relto:
There are some thick, woody stems associated with the five-lobed leaves. It is less clear what is going on with the round leaves. I wonder if the two plants have some kind of relationship: parasitic, commensal, or even symbiotic.
