Er'cana is a large age, featuring deep canyons and a large industrial facility. While portions of the machinery are still broken, a great deal of the devices are either still functional or have been repaired by the DRC. Most notably, the harvester train and pellet-production machinery are still operational.
[edit] Past and Present
Er'cana was once used by the D'ni for the production of nutrient-rich pellets. The harvester train was piloted along its track outside of the currently-accessible area to collect grain of some sort, and the raw material was moved into the large production facility. A variety of devices were used to grind, clean, and cook the grain into large pellets, which could be linked back to D'ni to supply nutrients to the light-emitting lake algae. Due to the lack of nutrients over the last few centuries, along with other factors, the lake algae have largely died off. However, the DRC has asked explorers to contribute to the restoration by cooking pellets and trying to bring the lake algae back to a healthy population. A number of explorer-run websites are researching pellet-production in hopes of finding the formula for a "perfect" pellet.
The accessible portion of Er'cana is fairly dry, in comparison to the snow-peaked mountains and shining ocean visible in the distance. This climate is theorized to be caused by environmental damage caused by the over-farming of the grain or pollution from the pellet facility. Despite the harsh appearance, several plants manage to grow in and around the small pools of water, indicating that the soil still contains some nutrients.
